characters
An Ominous Book spans a large cast of characters, a complex magic system involving the summoning of familiars and drama. The first book veers more into a lighthearted adventure, whereas the series becomes darker and more mature in the sequels.A few years before the story begins, a mortal human-elf named Lord Spaulding encounters a magical device of extraordinary destructive power. Unable to destroy or use it, he locks the device in a chest with the help of a priest named Hamarin.Busy with his duties as the Kasimma Clan Leader and a part-time ranger, his plans to bring the chest to the Elf Kingdom capital for proper disposal becomes thwarted.Much to his chagrin, his best friend and fellow ranger Trevilin has brought two unwanted guests to his home: two orphaned children that are his distant long-lost relatives.Conscious human children aren't allowed in the Kingdom, a simple plan to bring them to a relative in their home nation ends up as the trigger event of a story where the legendary Ominous Books become a pivotal aspect of his life.Dangerous as they are, the magic boosting abilities are second to none. In the right hands, they can keep the Elf Kingdom safe from harm. In the arms of an enemy, a potential means of long-lasting destruction.

Nelida is very open about disliking the Elf Kingdom. A strange country with no children, odd customs, a difficult language and a distant elf uncle that only begrudgingly tries to help her. After surviving various perils, she starts appreciating Spaulding and wishes to learn magic. If only she didn't stumble in front of a strange chest hidden in Spaulding's castle...

A widespread aspect of An Ominous Book is its magic system. Every person with the innate ability for magic will only attune to a single element and summon the same magic familiar devoid of intelligence known as a phantom beast. Some beasts are capable of transportation, others are purely defensive. Later books reveal elves with partial harlequin ancestry summon rare demonic beasts with variable psychic abilities. While dual harlequin elf mages are common, dual attunement is rare among pureblood and human elf hybrids. Spaulding is one such mage with weak water magic attunement.4 Ominous Books exist with different personalities and can only bond with a mage of their same element without mattering if the host is human, elf, harlequin, or with mixed ancestry. Their knowledge can boost the host's magic potential over 10,000 times and offer unique abilities depending on their phantom beast.
